Volunteering is Fun!
What does it take to be an Across Ages mentor?
Dependability, patience, flexibility... and most of all, a commitment
to a young person's success. Mentors support students in reaching
their academic and personal goals.
Mentors are regular people just
like you. Role models come in all shapes and sizes. They could
be bus drivers, firefighters, teachers, lawyers, grandmothers,
shop owners, executives, or fathers.
You can do this. All it takes
is the desire to make a positive impact in the life of a child. "I
recently relocated to Milford, my mentoring experience with Across
Ages gave me the immediate connection to my new community and provided
me with so many new contacts, resources, and friends in such a
short time frame. It's been an amazing experience!"
What
is it?
- Playing a board game
- Sharing a pizza
- Taking a walk in the park
- Just hanging out and talking
- Shooting hoops
Having a mentor is having someone who can cheer you on and spend
time with you; someone to help you realize how special you are.
The schedule can be flexible to meet the needs of the mentors
and youg people in different kinds of situations. Some matches
are on the weekend or in the evening. Others get together with
their mentees after school. There's almost no one so busy that
they can't find a way to fit in a few hours a month.
Who can be a mentor?
Mentors must be at least 45 years old and enjoy working with young
people. Prior to being paired with a youth, persons interested
in becoming a mentor must complete a written application, background
check, participate in an interview, and complete initial training.
Mentees come to the Across Ages program for all kinds of reasons.
Maybe they come from single parent homes or have two working parents.
Maybe they are falling into bad patterns at school. Maybe they
are the only boy in a house with three sisters. What they all
share in common is the need for friendship with a caring adult.
Each child needs a positive role model to impact his or her life,
and that role model can be you.
Young People with Mentors are more likely to:
- Stay in School
- Become more confident, competent and caring individuals
- Avoid substance abuse
- Develop an increased over-all sense of self-worth
We're here to help.
